Does social media affect our happiness?

The greatest thing you can do is to make your nervous system our ally instead of our enemy

Even though we are connected with eachother via social media and phones, we are now MORE stressed and MORE lonely than ever.

A study found that people who spend more than 2 hours a day on social media are twice as likely to feel socially isolated.

Another study found that since the year 2000 ( roughly when smartphones were available) found the average attention span has DECREASED by a third

How do we improve this? We need to change our mind to change our genes
- Researches at harvard found that mediation, alone can change the expression of genes that regulate inflammation, cell death (apoptosis) and oxidataive stress in as little as two weeks.

How does meditaiton do this?
Meditation causes part of your brain (the left prefrontal cortex) to send inhibitory to your amygdala(which is the emotional part of the brain)

Another study discusses this further, where people meditated 30 minutes a day for 8 weeks and an increase in brain size (their hippocampus) which lead to memory improvement and a decrease in their amygdala, leading to a reduction in anger and fear.

How Stress, anxiety and depression can lead to gut problems

Nearly 15% of the population has a range of gut reactions, from irritable bowel syndrome to chronic constipation.

Did you know that the majority of these reaction often reflect ones emotional state?

Lets talk about how Stress, anxiety and depression can lead to gut problems

1st- the biomechanial reactions that happen when we are not at ease.
- When the brain perceives a threat, the hypothalamus is triggered (this co ordinates all our vital functions and releases the stress hormone CRF)
- When CRF levels are high enough, it switches organs like the gut into stress mode.
- Studies show spiking CRF levels give symptoms of severe belly pain
- This can lead to the gut contracting more and when the contents are removed, it can result in diarrhoea.
- Or then gut can reverse its emptying and empty upwards and the gut wall becomes leakier and colon secretes more water and mucus.

2nd- How the Brain and the Guts nervous system communicate.
-The brain sends two sets of nerve signals, those that stimulate and those that inhibit gut stimulation.

3rd- The limbic system
Emotion-specific circuits within the limbic system get activated when you're angry, scared, feel hurt and when you feel hungry and/or thirsty.
The emotion related brain circuits send signals to the stomach when we face situations to rid it of some contents that might drain energy required for action. (hence why we need to go to the bathroom when we get nervous about a meeting etc)

The Gut and your health.

With rates of obesity increasing and our gut health declining, we need to look after our health and diet more efficiently, to help tackle our emotional and health problems.

In just 40 years, the rate of obesity has increased from 13% to 35%. Our gut has influence on our basic emotions, our pain sensitivity and our social interactions.

Our gut has its own nervous system , the enteric nervous system, and is made up of 50-100 million nerve cells.

There is more immune cells in the wall of our gut than circulating in the blood and bone marrow.

Our brain, gut and microbes in our body actually communicate to each other, and this is how the gut can influence your emotional state.

The brain influences your gut first, and the signals are generated by your microbes, and thees signals in turn communicate back to the brain, which can reinforce and can prolong the emotional state.

Recent studies have also begun to directly test the link between gut microbiota and behavioural abnormalities.

Studies have also found a link between Parkinsons and the gut. The enteric nervous system in the gut appears to undergo nerve degeneration typical of Parkinsons BEFORE the classical Parkinsons symptoms appear.

Depression is one of the most common disabilities. Studies have shown that 95% of the bodies serotonin is contained in cells in the gut. Furthermore, these cells are influenced by what we eat. You guessed it, the same cells in the gut that are influenced by what we eat are connected to the sensory nerves that relay messages to the brains emotion regulating centre.

Lets Talk about the brain and how your diet could be damaging the brain!

Thomas Edison once famously said the chief function of the body is to carry the brain around.

Some interesting facts about the brain are
It weighs approximately 3 pounds
has one hundred thousand miles of blood vessels
contains MORE connections than there are stars in the milky way
is the fattest organ in the body

In this post, we draw from the book Grain Brain, to talk about the importance of nutrients and brain function

To start, lets inform you that glucose is the major source of energy for most cells. The body can manufacture glucose from fat or proteins.

Insulin is essential for cellular metabolism. It moves glucose from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, and liver cells. Once it is deposited there, it can be used as fuel

IF we have too much processed foods, (too much glucose) our cells adapt and cells desensitise themselves to insulin, then insulin resistance occurs. This leads to cells ignoring the insulin and fail to retrieve glucose from the blood. The pancreas is then forced to produce more insulin and people then develop type 2 diabetes.

This can lead to high blood sugar and leads to toxic levels in the bloodstream leading to blindness, infections, nerve damage, heart disease and Alzheimers. From a chiropractic point of view, inflammation runs rampant in the body leading to a lot of muscle problems

Researchers here in Australia have also shown that people who have high blood sugar are at a much greater risk of brain shrinkage. Specifically, the loss of brain volume was in regions involved in memory and cognitive skills.
